Elkhart County's history goes back to early 1800s when it was inhabited mostly by the Potawatomi tribe. The area was primarily rural farmland with some rolling hills and even to this day you'll find some beautifulAmish buggies scenic areas along the St. Joseph River, like Bonneyville Mills County Park. In fact, the area is home to over 2000 acres of parks and open spaces for residents to enjoy.

Economically, the area is known as the "RV Capital of the World". Many jobs you'll find here are based around recreational vehicle manufacturing, whether it’s making the RV’s themselves or the parts that go into making them. It's important to note that farming also plays a big role in the local economy. In addition, tourism is too popular thanks to destinations like Das Dutchman Essenhaus and Amish Acres. Many people also find jobs in healthcare and education that serves local residents.

Elkhart County is rich with a number of educational museums, annual events and local sporting activities too. As for education, you'll find a number of school systems, as well as places for higher learning, like colleges and satellite schools. The county is also conveniently close to larger cities like South Bend (20 miles), Chicago (110 miles) and Indianapolis (150 miles).
